document.write("<p>To me, craftsmanship represents the soul of a people. It is a way to tell our stories, preserve our traditions, and express our creativity through materials we transform with our own hands. My name is Davens Pierre. I am a Haitian artisan and artist from Croix-des-Bouquets, and my journey in metalwork began when I was 13 years old. I do not come from a wealthy family. I grew up in a household that understood the value of hard work, effort, and perseverance. I have three brothers and three sisters, and my family experiences along with the environment in which I grew up helped shape who I am today. When I was young, my parents were not very supportive of my choice to pursue craftsmanship. They likely wanted me to take another path they considered more certain for my future. However, my passion for the work and the strength I drew from my roots pushed me forward. I grew up in a courtyard where the workshop of the artisan Wilbert Bruno was located. That is where I first began discovering metal craftsmanship. When the artisans finished working, I would take their tools, such as the hammer and chisel, and try to work the way I saw them doing it. That is how my curiosity began turning into a passion. After a while, Wilbert Bruno even paid me for a piece of work I had done. I was eight years old when my mother moved to Noailles in 2001. That is where I continued to grow and learn, in the Artistic Village of Noailles, where I became more deeply connected to the tradition of Haitian cut-metal artistry. This craft holds an important history in Croix-des-Bouquets. Among the prominent figures who shaped the development of this movement is George Liautaud, one of the leading figures in the history of Haitian cut-metal art. The legacy of the artisans who came before us continues to live on through generations who learn, create, and cause the tradition to evolve. What interests me greatly about this technique is how we can take discarded oil drums or old oil barrels that people no longer need, and use them to create something of value and beauty. To me, this is not merely a matter of transforming an oil barrel. It is a process where human hands, patience, and imagination grant a new life to a material that might otherwise have been considered useless. 1 In my work, I produce decorative art designed to adorn and beautify any type of space—whether it is a home, an office, a hotel, a restaurant, a gallery, or any other environment. At the same time, I create works of art that go beyond mere decoration. Every time I create a work of art, I strive to embed a message, an idea, a reflection, or a story behind it. I want the viewer not only to look at the work, but also to be able to reflect upon what it expresses. Nature is one of my primary sources of inspiration. I love creating works inspired by marine life, animals, plants, and other natural elements. I also enjoy exploring subjects related to human life, our culture, our society, and our experiences as human beings. I believe a work of art can do much more than decorate a space. It can prompt people to ask questions, reflect, remember, feel an emotion, or see things from a different perspective. Therefore, when I work with an old oil drum, I do not see just a barrel. I see a material capable of becoming a medium to express an idea. My goal is to continue developing my own artistic language as an artisan, while remaining faithful to my roots. I want to respect the tradition I have inherited, but I also want to keep seeking new ways to create new forms, new designs, and new works. I want my work to travel far beyond Haiti, so that more people can discover the richness of Haitian metal craftsmanship, understand the history behind it, and see how a simple material like an old oil drum can, through the hands of an artisan, be transformed into something of value, beauty, and soul. To me, this is where the true power of craftsmanship lies: taking what once seemed to have no value and giving it a new life, a new meaning, and a new story.
