Demetrio Aguilar was born and raised in Mexico in the village of Ocotlan de Morelos, Oaxaca. As the second son of renowned clay artesian Josefina Aguilar, Demetrio grew up in a family of clay artists, so much so that clay was one of his toys as an infant. Demetrio was a quick learner. He drew on the traditions of his grandmother and mother, learned to gather and prepare raw materials, and by the age of 7, figures he created in his mother’s style were already selling to collectors!

As time went on, he combined his mother’s folk art tradition with his own unique style. The results are some fantastic handcrafted munecas (figurines) and plaques with personal interpretations of religious, cultural, and family themes. He is known for his interpretations of Adam and Eve being expelled from the Garden of Eden, Day of the Dead scenes, and various Frida Kahlo interpretations. We are proud to have some of his work available at our shop!
